Former Conservative leader Michael Howard has accused the UK government of “grossly misleading” Parliament over the suspension of 30 licenses for arms exports to Israel, PA Media reports.According to Lord Howard, the government said that international humanitarian law is not the sole criterion for export licensing decisions and noted the exemption of F-35 fighter jets from this partial export ban.For her part, Baroness Chapman, a peer of the British Parliament, explained that the exemption was because F-35 components are part of the global supply chain and stopping their export could affect “global security.”However, Lord Howard argues that when other factors are taken into account, the government was not forced to suspend 30 weapons licenses and could have made other exceptions for Israel - for example, on self-defense grounds - but chose not to.Earlier, Britain announced that it would immediately suspend 30 of its 350 arms export licenses to Israel because of the risk that such equipment could be used to commit serious violations of international humanitarian law.
