Spain Supreme Court does not grant amnesty to ex-Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont

The Supreme Court of Spain did not grant amnesty to the former head of the government of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, and upheld the national arrest warrant for him. This is noted in the statement of Spain’s top court.
Accordingly, the Supreme Court recognized that the crime of embezzlement of state funds, of which Puigdemont is accused, is not subject to amnesty, and therefore upheld the national arrest warrant for him.
The amnesty law for persons involved in the separatist process of Catalonia entered into force on June 11. It was approved on May 30, thanks in part to the support of Puigdemont's Together for Catalonia party.
This amnesty is aimed at "normalizing coexistence" in Catalonia, and was agreed by parties supporting the region's secession from Spain in exchange for the parliamentary support for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's new term after an inconclusive general election. Without it, he would not have been able to assume the position of the PM again.
