Ministry of Water Resources of Kazakhstan says Caspian Sea levels rise

AKIPRESS.COM - The level of the northeastern part of the Caspian Sea (Atyrau region) increased by 119 cm in 2024, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan reported.
The rise was facilitated by the flow of flood water along the Zhaiyk River in April-May, as well as additional canals laid by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation together with the local government.
During the floods, about 7.4 billion cubic meters of water entered the Caspian Sea through the Zhaiyk River. 350 million cubic meters of water entered the Caspian Sea through the additional canals in Atyrau region.
The additional canals were cleaned and strengthened. For example, an additional 14.5 km long canal was dug along the Sokolok canal, through which water was also sent to the Caspian Sea.
"Flood water was not only collected in reservoirs, 12.4 billion cubic meters of water was sent to water bodies, estuaries and water meadows. 3.3 billion cubic meters of water have been sent to Lake Balkhash since the beginning of the floods. In addition, the Northern Aral Sea is being filled with water. More than 1.1 billion cubic meters of water have been sent there," Vice Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurlan Aldamzharov said.
