Referendum on nuclear power plant construction in Kazakhstan to take place in fall

AKIPRESS.COM - A referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan will be held in the fall, President Kassym-Joomart Tokayev said at an award ceremony of media workers.
The head of state noted that the issue is widely discussed.
"The country has great opportunities for the development of nuclear energy. It is important to use them effectively. The final decision on this issue will be made by the people. The referendum will take place this fall. The government will determine the exact date," Tokayev said.
The President instructed the government to study the possibilities of developing safe and environmentally friendly nuclear energy in Kazakhstan in 2021. He proposed putting the issue of building a nuclear power plant to a national referendum at the beginning of this year. Extensive public hearings will be held in the country.
